After working as a cook in exclusive Safari lodges around East & West Africa, Mama has gone back to her childhood roots preparing home-style dishes with a modern eclectic twist. This was the foundation of the story that inspired NyamaMama (‘nyama’ is the kiSwahili word for meat). The original brand story was developed by the UK company The Gorgeous Group, but it was up to Planning Interiors to realize this project and R World Enterprises to implement it.
The design challenge was to re-create a roadside diner atmosphere which is hugely popular in Kenya, which will appeal to both middle-class Kenyan users and tourists alike. The greatest feature of the space is the reconditioned leather sofas that resemble car seats, nostalgic accessories and locally fabricated and hand woven dining chairs. A staff favorite is the cut-out shipping container that is used to showcase the open-plan kitchen.
